Top 10 Mutliplayer Games for PC Contd…

5. Age of Empires II
So finally an RTS emerges in the list of the finest. And indeed it is AoE II, one of the most celebrated game of all time.  Developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft, AoE II was a real time strategy game set in the middle ages featuring thirteen playable civilizations. The game featured five historically-based campaigns and also had a fine multiplayer mode. Enjoyed around the globe locally on LAN, the game was also supported by the MSN gaming Zone for the multiplayer experience. The game had a huge fan following all across the globe and hence was part of many gaming competitions as the standard RTS.  This game is a fine example of a classic RTS that never grows old (It is actually considered better than its sequel AoE III which released many years later).

4. Battlefield
Number 4 overall but numero uno in terms of FPSs, Battlefield is probably the finest team based first person shooter series to have ever hit the stores. Now there is no way, I can put just a single title from the series at this spot. Right from the original to Battlefield 3, all the titles have been revolutionary in their own time. The Co-op campaigns, the large multiplayer battles (which involved on piloting a number of vehicles) , squad based combat are a few elements that make the whole franchise deserve its spot among the finest multiplayer games ever  made. This FPS series, developed by DICE, is till date the best FPS experience a game can offer.

The Top 3….

3. World of Warcraft
If this game were a country  it would be placed among the top 10 in terms of population!! And that’s not even counting the players who are registered on unofficial private servers of the game. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, this MMORPG held the title of THE most played game in the entire world for a long time. With a base of more than 10 million official subscribers, this franchise has been the undisputed king of its genre since its very first installment in 2004. The game has, till now, seen three expansions – Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm (Cataclysm for us was a bit of a let down, though we have enjoyed the prequels very much) ; and the fourth one, Mists of Pandaria, is currently in beta testing stages and is being readied for a release very soon. The game features two playable factions: Alliance and Horde and diverse race-class combinations for character creation. Once a character is created, it can be played and leveled with thousands of other registered players in a vast world full of quests and dungeons and what not. It isn’t necessary that you interact or play with other players but, the game requires an internet connection at all times as it is completely online and all the data is saved directly on the servers.  The game, however, features multiplayer (in the true sense of the word) in several different ways by providing PvP battlegrounds and arenas and a huge array of 5-40 man dungeons/raids. Apart from the much enjoyable gameplay and a truly addictive nature of the game, the huge fan base of this franchise is reason enough for this title to belong in the top ten listing.

2. Starcraft
Ah yes! Another RTS! And this one is yet another fine example of an amazing RTS with an outstanding multiplayer. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, this series has been the most followed, played, viewed and celebrated RTS of all time.  Starcraft has literally revolutionized E-sport. This amazing action packed RTS sets a benchmark when it comes to the genre and no game so far has risen above it. Many might argue that the Age series can be considered better or almost equivalent to Starcraft but, the fact that the latest editions of both games have had strikingly different user feedbacks, the SC series just takes the edge. Where AoE III was considered good but not great, SC2 raised the bar that the original had set and offered almost everything that was wanted from the sequel which released after a decade. SC2 offers everything and a whole lot more when it comes to epic RTS experience especially in the multiplayer department which is undoubtedly the finest as far as strategy games are concerned. The game is a prime event of all E-sport tournament and its fun and professional matches are watched and enjoyed by almost any gamer all across the globe.

And the No.1 Multiplayer Game is…..

1. League of Legends
How can a game based on a popular mod get the top spot you ask? Well then I confidently put out a few epic reasons for it: Awesome Developers, Largest gaming community, Addictive gameplay, Regular Updates with new content almost every week, Regular tournaments and events (game based and general)….I can go on and on.

Based on one of the finest mods to date, DoTA (Defense of the Ancients), this game revolutionized the MOBA genre. There aren’t that many titles in this genre, but League of Legends (popularly referred to as LoL), developed by Riot Games Inc., is among the first and the finest example of such games. With a subscriber base of more than 32 million registered users, League of Legends is now THE most played game in the entire world beating World of Warcraft after the game had reigned supreme in this department for almost half a decade. LoL is a game that allows free online play with a large community (the reason that it’s free actually makes it more popular). Each user, referred to as a Summoner, in LoL terminology, gets a Summoner profile which he/she can level from 1-30. The game offers a huge array of champions (102 as of 9/8/2012) which a user can buy (in exchange of an in-game currency) and then play them in the various maps in Leauge of Legends to gain XP (Experience Points) and IP (Influence Points). The most amazing thing about this game is the fact that no two games can ever be the same. There are infinite possibilities of team compositions and the strategies involved are endless and hence the gameplay always stays fresh and it is pretty hard to get bored of the game even though the number of maps are limited. I, myself, have clocked over a 1000 hours on this game and I still want more.

The fact that this game is so active, considering it receives updates on almost a daily basis, makes it truly outstanding. Riot has done such a fine job with the marketing of this game, that now it has become immensely popular among gamers from across the globe. It is certainly the most enjoyed, talked about, viewed and off-course played game in any E-sport event. Apart from the gaming experience of this product, Riot also does very well to organize many different contests and events that are related to the game but do not involve playing – like comic strip creation contests, costume design contents etc. that reward amazing prizes. These also appeal to a large chunk of the community (generally to those who have a creative bent of mind) and always keep them interested in the game as well.

All of this makes League of Legends the most celebrated game in the history of multiplayer gaming and hence it rightly deserves its top spot!
