Ever wanted to play a game with the feel of Old West? Gunman Clive is your game to play then. Gunman Clive is a sepia-toned 2D Western done up as a platform shooter, its scratchy, hand-drawn aesthetic resembles early 20th century animation. The first and foremost thing that you see in a game is well, the first and foremost thing is that you see the game! Gunman Clive, as stated has a sepia toned display set up in the Old West structure and it is pleasing to the eye to say the least. You might not exactly fall in love with it but it does gives you the feel of the Old West.
Coming to the controls of Gunman Clive, it has the basic, move, jump, shoot structure, the movement is by the touching the direction/movement scope that you see on the left side of the image below.
The jump and the shoot touch buttons too are displayed and are responsive cent percent. We didn’t really get what the up arrow on the movement gyro does for it certainly doesn’t let you jump nor does it let you change the shooting angle. That’s something that we too need to figure out if there is anything to it at all!
Gunman Clive does give you the feel of the age old, loved by all game ‘Contra’, the difference is in the set up though. There are a number of gunmen to battle, a number of obstacles to jump pass, a number of animals to counter and villains to fight. Stages are short, sweet and varied. One minute you’ll be zipping through a mine cart, the next hopping over bandit-filled train cars, then precariously balancing over a rolling boulder. There’s also more futuristic fare like riding a rocket or navigating high-tech bases with gravity beams.
Now even though the stages are short, we would have liked it better if there was a certain checkpoint system involved and lives involved as well. Even though that might have made the game a little less challenging, it would have irritated someone dying close to the end of the stage a little less as well.
Coming to the difficulty of Gunman Clive, it offers good enough difficulty and the first couple of plays you might take time to adjust to it and the obstacles, the animals that come in the way too might confuse you and might even rush onto you but one tends to get used to them with time.
All in all, Gunman Clive is a fast paced shooting game with the feel of the Old West that adds on to it’s decent enough charm. We give Gunman Clive a good 4 on 5 from us at Observer’s Paradise.
