Knights overcome the Kings!
Due to some unavoidable circumstances,we were unable to keep up with the ongoings of The Indian Premier League 2012….but now we are back! But first things first. This edition of IPL has been the best one so far as far I am concerned. It’s a rarity to see jam packed cricket stadiums due to an over doze of cricket in this era,but the glamour that comes along with the IPL and the quality of cricket associated with it just makes us glued to our television sets!
Today’s match was between KKR and CSK. If you are Kolkatta fan, then you must be jumping on our couch right now!To beat one of the strongest team in the tournament in their own backyard is something you can brag about for a while. Chennai never had enough runs on the board and they were 15-20 runs short. On a slowish pitch where the ball was sticking a little, they put on 139 on the board. The startling fact was that they just managed to secure two boundaries in the last 10 overs or so.With a power packed batting line up that boasts of exquisite shot makers, this was something that not many would have dared to predict.
Kolkatta were always one step ahead of CSK while chasing such a modest total.Once again, their captain led from the front scoring yet another invaluable 61 with the rest of the batsmen chipping in with a couple of 20’s.If Kolkatta are to win this time, they need to reduce their dependence on Gautam Gambhir. It’s impossible for him to win all the matches for them on his own.He needs some support from the other end ,especially from any one of the overseas players.Kallis hasn’t come out with flying colours so far and Brendom McCullum’s knock of 158( in the inaugural IPL) seems a long forgotten story. He is no doubt a class player but in this tournament you need to pick a team with the right combination taking into consideration the form of the players.Shakib Al Hassan has been warming the benches for a while now even thought he performed pretty well in the limited number of opportunities that he received.Another amusing fact that I noticed was about their team owner Shahrukh Khan.In the first edition,he had ants in his pants as he kept jumping on his seat for every boundary struck and every wicket taken. Now,he seems to be much more relaxed and matured and is keen on reading the game at the given situation rather than jump to conclusions!
The positive for CSK in this match was the resurrection of Suresh Raina. The lad from Uttar Pradesh completed 2000 runs in the IPL making him the first player to achieve that feat.Raina’s form is essential for CSK.He is one of the best in our country when it comes to T20 cricket. The fact that he finally got some runs under his best would please the team owners.
We have a double header tomorrow as Deccan take on Pune while Rajasthan takes on Delhi. An exciting day of cricket lies ahead of us!
