Finally! Finally! Finally, there is a movie in Bollywood worth talking of. Vicky Donor is one movie that we were waiting for and the good thing, it proved to it’s mettle or rather we should say proved to be the right sperm!
There was a time in Bollywood when everyone used to talk about ‘hat ke’ films. Films that are different, with themes that were different from the normal routine films i.e. boy loves girl, girl loves boy and somewhere round the corner there is a misunderstanding waiting to happen or a villain ready to reveal before it all goes down and more often than not, with a happy ending. What these ‘hat ke’ films did was nothing other than making the producers repent for having made them.
Vicky Donor, is definitely the best ‘hat ke’ film of Bollywood of the recent past. Vicky Arora (Ayushmann Khurana) is an aimless and jobless Delhi boy. He is persuaded by Dr Baldev Chaddha (Annu Kapoor), an infertility clinic owner to become a sperm donor that could help childless couples. After much resistance, he finally agrees to the act to earn some easy money. Soon he makes a fortune out of his potent attribute. He also marries the love of his life Ashima (Yaami Gautam) but things take a drastic turn when she comes to know about his covert contributions to the sperm bank.
Vicky Donor is pretty much a love story and yet it is different. Even though the story revolves around sperm donation and good happy Punjabi families. From what we remember, Ayushmann, the find of MTV Roadies, in his Roadies days, did a task related to sperm donation and it appears, it is something that has been providing him with lucky breaks. Anyhow, Ayushmann has done more than a descent job in portraying a complete Delhi da punjabi munda. One thing that we loved about Vicky Donor is the writing. The plot is different and yet the same for it has a love story in the back drop but the writing is apt and surely fits the way the Delhi people talk especially the Punjabi family of Vicky Arora in the movie. Annu Kapoor is hilarious in his role of a Doctor. Yaami Gautam too is good in her role and the flirtatious romance between Ayushmann and her does bring a smile to your face.
Another good thing about the movie was the way Delhi has been caught on camera by the director. The love story between the lead pair that starts off on a flirtatious note but soon translates into an amiable affair, brings a sublime smile on your face throughout. The absurdities of becoming a sperm donor and the Punjab and West Bengal alliance are one laugh riot. Kudos to the director and the team of writers for taking up such issues sensibly and delicately. In no way you’ll find cross culture remarks derogatory or hurting people sentiments.
Every character in the movie has played their role brilliantly. The hero Ayushmann Khurrana’s grandmother in the movie is way too cool and the hero Vicky rightly says there are only two things modern in Delhi – the Metro and his grandmom. The nightly binging scenes of his mom and grandmom, especially with goggles is hilarious.
All in all, Vicky Donor is the movie that clicked and not because of one specific performance but for everyone, from the director, to the story line, to the dialogues to the acting by several new comers and everything else just clicked to produce a laugh riot. Even thought one might consider it to be an adult movie or rather not for kids movie for the big theme is of sperm donation but Vicky Donor is a complete family entertainer. There is no cheap comedy whatsoever even though there are a couple of scenes that can be called cheap but given the way today’s Bollywood humor is functioning, we wouldn’t term them cheap whatsoever.
Amazing movie and finally a movie worth watching or worth spending your money on. There aren’t a number of bollywood movies nowadays that are worth it, Vicky Donor is certainly worth going for.
We give Vicky Donor a good 3.5 on 5 from us at Observer’s Paradise.
